Subtraction of Rashis

When planets are stationed in two different rashis, the distance in terms of degrees between the two planets can be gauged by substraction of one rashi from the other. The distance between planets needs to be judged for several reasons in Indian astrology. For example, when the Moon comes close to the Sun, it will not be visible and this is termed as Amavasya or New Moon. Similarly, there are certain other concepts of a planet becoming combust due to its being close to the Sun.

This is one of the reasons for computing distances. There are several other concepts where the subtraction procedure given here will be used. It is one of the most used concepts in Indian astrology.

Procedure

Let us see with an example how 2 Rashis are subtracted.

We start with vikala. Subtract 20 from 23 to get 3. Move on to kala. 57 cannot be subtracted from 52. Borrow 1 amsa which is equal to 60 kalas. 60+52-57 = 55. The balance amsa is 20. You cannot reduce 25 from 20. Borrow 1 sign = 30 amsas. 21-1+30-25 =25. You have borrowed 1 rashi. Reduce 7 from 9-1 which gives 1.

Practice this with different longitudes to become perfect in subtraction of rashis.
